Celebrating Excellence in Emergency Nursing: A New Award Honors Compassionate Care

In a heartfelt collaboration between Ula and Benjamin Liaw, Partners for Health Foundation and Mountainside Medical Center, a new annual award will be introduced to recognize outstanding emergency room nurses. The Benjamin and Ula Rainbow Liaw Award for Excellence in Emergency Room Nursing will be presented for the first time in May 2026 at the hospital’s Annual Awards Ceremony.

This award is a tribute to the exceptional care the Liaws received and a celebration of the nurses who bring skill, compassion, and leadership to the front lines of emergency care.

“We wanted to honor the nurses who make a real difference in people’s lives—often in their most vulnerable moments,” said Ula Liaw. “This award is our way of saying thank you and encouraging continued excellence.”

Award Criteria

Each year, one emergency room nurse will be selected for demonstrating excellence across seven key domains:

  • Clinical Excellence: Exceptional emergency nursing skills, compassionate care, and critical response.
  • Leadership: Mentorship, advocacy, and influence within the unit and beyond.
  • Professionalism: Ethical integrity, professional presence, and commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Innovation and Improvement: Contributions to evidence-based practices, research, and quality initiatives.
  • Advocacy and Community Engagement: Outreach, disaster response, and support for underserved populations.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Strong communication, reliability, and respect within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Education and Mentorship: Teaching, training, and fostering growth in others.

This award not only recognizes individual excellence but also highlights the vital role emergency nurses play in shaping patient outcomes and advancing healthcare.
